Drumchapel Anti-racism Campaign 2025

This video clip and blog are part of the anti-racism campaign entitled “Hope Not Hate” organised by G15 Thriving Places in 2025. Since 2022 we have promoted an anti-racism campaign during the month of October, stemming initially from the “Show Racism the Red card” campaign. Each year, we create a different theme and this year, 2025, we opted for “Hope Not Hate”. The reason for the choice of this theme came from the English flag being recently used to promote a white supremacy agenda, and in Scotland, unfortunately, some people followed suit using the saltire Scottish flag with the same intention.

We decided to reclaim the saltire as part of the campaign and hung, in the community centre, twenty-six flags from countries of origin of many New Scots, who now live in Drumchapel. In the middle of the twenty-six flags, we hung the saltire to show that the saltire is not a racist flag, on the contrary, it is a flag of solidarity and care, signalling a welcoming people. To show how much in Scotland we do not want to discriminate against anyone who comes from another country, we have adopted the term New Scot to indicate people who have come to make Scotland their home.

We organised a series of campaign activities during the month of October, reaching out to hundreds of people in Drumchapel, through the schools, several community and Third Sector organisations and the local shopping centre. Our hope is that the campaign activities will contribute to creating another narrative and practice, not of hate and discrimination, but of care and solidarity.
